Portrait Process |

The process for commissioning a painting is relatively simple:
After you contact the artist at either robbla1981@gmail.com or at 415-350-4924, you will set a time to meet in person to discuss the details. If you are located far from Pennsylvania, these initial details can be discussed over the phone. At this time, you and the artist will discuss such details as the size of the painting, the type and number of subjects depicted, as well as background, and the pricing. You will also discuss the time frame, and where the painting will hang (as
Once all of the details are in order, you and the artist will review and sign the artist's contract. At this time, a deposit of 50% of the total price is due.
The next step is a photography session, where the artist will shoot several digital photos of the subject. For portrait commissions, the artist may ask a series of questions to try to get to know the subject better, as this will help him create a more personal painting. If the subject is unavailable to be photographed (such as a deceased person, or perhaps if the painting is a surprise gift for the subject) the artist may be able to work with existing photos supplied by the client, but for technical and artistic reasons, the artist preferrs to shoot his own photos whenever possible. Copywrited images (such as those taken by another professional photographer) will not be used without that person's permission.
After the photos are taken, the artist will create a digital mockup of what your painting will look like. What this means is that the artist may use elements from several photos to create one image, adjusting the color and enhancing the lighting. The artist will then send you this image for your approval. You may request small changes, such as moving the subject up up or down within the frame. If necessary, an additional photography session may be booked. Once you have signed off on the mock up image, the image is considered locked, and further change requests can not be made.
Using your approved mock up image as reference, the artist will typically create a rough underpainting in acrylic, then paint the final image in oil on top of the underpainting. Of course, this process varies depending on the specific nature of the painting (for example, if the client wants an all oil painting). Depending on the size and detail level of the painting, this can take between one and four months. At your request, the artist can email you several "in progerss" images of your painting so you know what to expect upon delivery.
Once the painting is finished, the artist will make arrangements to deliver it to you, or if necessary, have it shipped (shipping and handeling costs are not included in the price of the painting and will be agreed to in the contract). At this time, the remaining 50% of the price is due before the painting is handed over. |
